Newness of Life
by Larry Burkett
In many ways, I think I have a great advantage by not being saved until age 32, because I clearly recognize what newness of life is. It’s being snatched out of the clutches of Satan and thrust into the Spirit of God.
The apostle Paul addressed this issue in today’s Scripture verse and the surrounding verses. When you and I accept Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, we literally have a new life—a new spirit living within us.
God’s Word tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The word transformed is a translation of the Greek metamorphosis, the process by which a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Isn’t that a beautiful picture?
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we are immune to temptation or that we won’t sin anymore. Quite the contrary. When we are trying to live for the Lord, Satan will try even harder to distract us or send us down the wrong road.
I can assure you that on any given day I am capable of letting my anger overwhelm me, bad attitudes override my actions, or my weaknesses influence my decisions. But I have found that the more I yield to the power of the Holy Spirit, the more God helps me overcome those things.
If you haven’t experienced that newness of life, it is never too late.
