GIF Leaving a Legacy

“A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.”
(Proverbs 13:22 NIV)

Leaving a Legacy
by Chuck Bentley

Certainly this proverb makes it clear that a good man thinks well beyond his own needs and makes plans for an inheritance that will extend to his grandchildren.

I have always admired the philosophy of R.G. and Evelyn LeTourneau, who were more concerned with leaving their children to meet the needs of the world than leaving the world to meet the needs of their children. Often we fail to realize that an inheritance can be so much richer than the passing on of money to the next generation. Allow me a few other possible “inheritances” for your consideration:

1. Leave a legacy of righteousness in the way you conduct your life;
2. Leave a legacy of love in the way you treat others;
3. Leave a legacy of grace in the way you forgive faults;
4. Leave a legacy of faithfulness in the way that you love God;
5. Leave a legacy of joy in the way you endure hardships;
6. Leave a legacy of generosity in the way you liberally give;
7. Leave a legacy of character in the way you live out biblical values;
8. Leave a legacy of servanthood in the way you humbly care for others.

I had the privilege of attending Larry Burkett’s memorial service. It was there that I was struck by the real legacy of this godly man. Not a person expressed gratitude for his financial wisdom or expansive ministry. Each person who spoke referenced a legacy that sounded much closer to the qualities listed above.

Yes, leave your children and grandchildren an inheritance, one that will endure far longer than a deposit in their bank account.
