Learning Self-Discipline
by Larry Burkett

Being legalistic and rigid is not a cure for the lack of self-discipline. Both conditions are extremes and are beyond scriptural boundaries.

Self-sacrifice does not ensure spirituality and often is the indicator of self-centeredness. For instance, if the time you spend watching television is robbing you of time in God’s Word, set a realistic time limit. Determine to watch television only between certain hours and no more.

In financial decisions, self-discipline should be the norm, but they must be balanced by reason. Overreacting will result in frustration and failure. It also will create conflict in the home. Instead, create the goals of a budget and a balanced bank account.

Whether your lack of self-discipline is in spending, entertainment, gossiping, eating, or some other area, correcting the problem can free your mind of doubts, frustrations, and bondage.

Only by knowing and applying self-discipline can you have self-respect and develop a godly self-image.
