Financially Assisted Suicide
by Chuck Bentley

The most common group that commits suicide is adult males. And a common source of pain in their lives is their finances. I have known six men who completed this horrifying act of self-destruction.

I have come to term this tragedy as a “Financially Assisted Suicide.”

Satan works hard to cause all of us, especially men, to derive our identity from work or financial success. When a man is out of work or has a reversal of financial success, he senses a loss of identity and purpose. This loss leads him to embarrassment and despair.

It is so important to base our identity on God’s truth, not in our work or money or possessions. The Lord warns us to be careful that we never define our life by our possessions. It is a dangerous and potentially destructive path.

Romans 12:1-2 is the solution to free ourselves from conformity to the patterns of this world. When freed of placing our identity in money and possessions, we are also protected from Satan’s lies.

These tragic suicides are always a reminder to me to take God’s Word seriously and encourage men to renew their minds on His truth that will set them free.
