“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”
(Psalm 111:10)

Fear of the Lord
by Larry Burkett

We know that “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18), so you would think that there would be no place for persistent fear. We are assured time and again in God’s Word that we don’t need to fear the future; He will take care of us.

But what about another kind of fear—fear of God? Do I fear God? Oh yes, but it’s the kind of fear that is the beginning of wisdom. You can replace the word “fear” with “reverence” or “awe.” We should be in awe of God: His power, His love, His grace, His compassion. How could we not be in awe of Him?

As believers, we should have that kind of fear, which is actually reverence for God.

Then there’s the fear of God’s judgment. “Justice for man comes from the Lord” (Proverbs 29:26). “We shall all stand before the judgment seat of God” (Romans 14:10).

I believe I would sum it all up by quoting yet another verse: “The fear of the Lord prolongslife, but the years of the wicked will be shortened” (Proverbs 10:27).

God said it. I believe it!
