GIF Covetousness

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
(Exodus 20:17)

Covetousness
by Larry Burkett

Covetousness is a desire to have what belongs to others. This is a characteristic that rears its head when we begin to compare ourselves with others and see what they have that we don’t have—but would like to.

We tend to measure our successes against the achievements of friends or family or even fellow church members. Often career choices are made, based on gaining the status, income, or prestige others have, rather than what is truly best.

To avoid covetousness, take the long-term view: Understand that God has a unique plan for you. Fulfillment comes by seeking His will and His way and following His plan. You’ll only reap frustration when you covet someone else.

Remember, “This you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetousman, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God” (Ephesians 5:5).

Lord, show me if there is any covetousness in me.
