GIF Choosing Godly Counsel

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly.

(Psalm 1:1)

Choosing Godly Counsel
by Larry Burkett

People have often asked me, “Should a Christian ever use non-Christian counselors, such as lawyers, doctors, accountants?” I believe the answer to that question is in today’s verse.

God’s Word teaches that we should seek our counsel from other Christians—godly men and women who understand and try to obey God’s Word.

For example, if you are going to choose a doctor, you want to know that the person who is going to take care of you has God’s wisdom, as well as being skilled in the medical profession.

If you have a non-Christian counselor (doctor, dentist, attorney), God’s Word teaches that you should not get rid of that person. That can be a bad witness to an unsaved person. Perhaps God put you with that person for the purpose of leading him or her to the Lord. If these counselors have been wise, ethical, and honest, then stick with them.

I counseled a Christian businessman who had a non-Christian accountant and attorney. For about 10 years this businessman had been doing unethical, dishonest practices, at the encouragement of his accountant, in order to save taxes. His attorney kept him from being caught.

As this man’s relationship with God grew, it became evident that he couldn’t continue these business practices. He had to stop the dishonest practices and make restitution. The accountant and attorney quit; he has since made restitution and now has godly counselors.

Read today’s verse over again. Do you need to make any changes in your own life?
