Let Your Light Shine

Fear puts integrity to the test.

When money’s tight, a job uncertain, or the future unstable, we may be tempted to compromise. We might hide the truth, cut corners, make questionable financial decisions, or justify our behavior due to fear of what might happen if we don’t, but Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He says, “You’re the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14–16) Light shines the brightest when surroundings are dark.

In the same way, integrity is noticed more when circumstances are difficult. Anyone can claim to trust the Lord when everything’s going well, but when financial pressure comes, will we still choose honesty, generosity, and obedience? We demonstrate that security isn’t found in our paycheck, bank account, or our ability to control the future. Our security is in the Lord.

Integrity may require telling the truth when a lie could save us money. Or refusing an unethical choice when you desperately need income. Maybe it’s continuing to give generously when fear tells you to hold on to whatever you have. Fear will ask, “What if God doesn’t provide?” Faith will respond, “He’s faithful, so I’ll obey Him and trust Him with the outcome.”

Don’t let fear extinguish your light. When pressure rises, cling to the Lord’s goodness. Integrity during difficult circumstances can become the clearest demonstration of faith that others will ever see.
