Crazy Money! The Importance of Seeking Wise Counsel
It’s Crazy Money Day!
I recently read about Jason Kurland, the “Lottery Lawyer.” He appeared on national television and advised some of America’s biggest lottery winners. His advice? Hire a trusted attorney immediately and never tell anyone you’ve won the lottery. Over the years, he represented people with a combined $2.5 billion in lottery jackpots. Then, federal investigators discovered that Kurland and his associates were corrupt. They funneled more than $107 million into risky deals and fraudulent investments. That’s a powerful reminder that credentials and popularity don’t always equal integrity.
Finding trustworthy investment advisors requires patience and diligence. Begin by seeking recommendations from mature believers, trusted friends, or respected professionals. Verify an advisor’s credentials, licensing, and disciplinary history, and don’t hesitate to ask about their experience, their fees, or investment philosophy. Avoid anyone who pressures you into quick decisions or promises guaranteed returns. Seek multiple opinions before making any significant financial commitments.
Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Ultimately, choose advisors whose character matches their competence. It’s just as important as their investment performance. Jason Kurland lacked integrity and paid the consequences: 13 years in federal prison. The judge told the court that his luck had run out.
