Training for Godliness

Are you busy training?

In 1 Timothy 4:7–8, the Apostle Paul gives Timothy this challenge: Train yourself for godliness. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Managing money is an opportunity for training in godliness. When we create and follow a budget, we’re training ourselves to exercise self-control. When we choose contentment over impulse purchasing, we’re strengthening our trust in the Lord. When we give generously, we’re loosening money’s grip on our hearts. When we save for future needs instead of seeking immediate gratification, we’re practicing constraint and wisdom.

While physical training has value, godliness has value for both this life and eternity, and that’s an important perspective. A healthy retirement account, a paid-off house, or a growing investment portfolio may improve our earthly lives, but only Christlike character has eternal value, and money is one of God’s training tools. He uses everyday financial decisions to shape our character, deepen our faith, and teach us to rely on Him. Every dollar you steward faithfully is a step in becoming the person God wants you to be.
