Become a Saver
Want to become a better saver?
America needs to adopt the Biblical practice of saving for future needs. Credit is the opposite of savings. You charge purchases with a credit card, then try to pay later. If you’re unable, you incur interest charges that increase the payments. It’s better to say no to what you want today so you can afford what you need tomorrow. Saving doesn’t represent a lack of faith. Saving allows you to avoid a lifelong dependence on debt. In 2007, the Consumer Federation of America managed a campaign to promote the habit of saving. They encouraged people to take a pledge and address a different aspect of saving each day for a week. They promoted things like:
A Family Savings Day – Take a day to educate the family about budgeting, saving, retirement, and workplace benefits.
Save Automatically – Implement automatic transfers to a savings or retirement account.
Save for retirement – Open or contribute to a tax-exempt account.
Save at Tax Time – Determine how to wisely steward your refund.
Pay off high-interest debt – Free up money in the budget to pay down debt.
Save for Emergencies – Open a designated account and contribute via automatic deposits.
Proverbs 21:20 in the Amplified version reads like this, “There is precious treasure and oil in the house of the wise, but a short-sighted and foolish man swallows it up and wastes it.” Try spending a week to focus on becoming a better saver of everything that God has entrusted to you!
