Make Christ-Honoring Financial Choices this Year
Will you honor Christ with your finances this year?
We’re inundated with financial advice. Sources for making and managing money are all around us. I know because I try to keep up with that the advice the world offers and filter that through a Biblical lens. The vast majority of what I read can be condensed to a simple formula: do this or that to increase your earnings and to have more money. It’s stated, packaged, and even disguised in thousands of ways, but the common denominator is usually the same: More is better.
Now, the Bible doesn’t actually offer this advice. The Scripture tells us primarily what we’re to believe about money. That’s profoundly different from telling us what to do. Let me give you an example. Romans 12:1-2 says that we’re not to be “conformed to the world but transformed by the renewing of our minds.” This means we have to change our beliefs if we expect to be truly changed. A simple application of this throughout this year is to ask yourself, “Is the financial choice I’m making honoring to Christ and His kingdom?” The only way to confidently know is by knowing God’s Word. For instance, the Bible instructs us in I Timothy 6:17, “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” Now, that’s a radically different message from striving to become the millionaire next door.
