We are Wealthy!

Do you feel wealthy?

A 2012 Fidelity Investment Survey asked their clients what level of investable assets they needed to “feel wealthy”? In other words, how much would it take to feel rich? The answer: “Two times more than we have right now.” All of us are actually lavishly wealthy. We have air conditioning. We have bun warmers in the leather seats of our SUVs. We can get on a plane, be served hot food, get a good night’s sleep, and wake up on the other side of the world. God warned the Israelites before entering the Promised Land that their abundance would be a test of their memory and loyalty.

Moses told them in Deuteronomy, “When you’ve eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he’s given you. Be careful that you don’t forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws, and his decrees that I’m giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you’ll forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Deuteronomy 8:10-14) The Lord redeemed us from a life of slavery. Let’s not hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. He wants to be our security, our refuge, and our strength.
