Living in the Light

Jesus never said having money or material possessions was wrong, but how they’re used can reveal symptoms of real problems.

Jesus warned us to live in the light: to guard our hearts against greed, covetousness, and pride. Those are tools that Satan uses to control and manipulate the world. It makes you the focus of your spending. It diverts resources that God gave you to steward for your family and His kingdom. God uses money to strengthen your trust in Him as your Provider. He wants you to be a faithful steward by seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness. By being generous with money He will unite you and other Christians in blessings. He uses the abundance of some believers to supply the needs of others and to fund His work. He will use your extra funds – or lack of funds – to provide direction in your life. He directs us both when he provides or withholds. We just need to trust Him.

We should gratefully accept what He provides when the world shouts, “It’s not enough.”  And fight back against their lies of, “Go ahead. You deserve it! Stretch yourself and look successful.” We need to show the world that God’s way is much better. His word on finances must be taught clearly and undiluted. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
