Be Encouraged! You CAN Break the Grip of Materialism

Want to give more, but think you can’t afford it?

I want you to be encouraged! You can give more than you may think is even possible. Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.” Who do you honor first with your money? The answer reveals who or what has captured your heart. If it’s the world, then there’s no end to the desire to spend on yourself. Things have no lasting value, but when we give, we make deposits into an eternal account. We honor the Lord, by putting Him first through giving. It’s not that He needs our money, but that we need to be conformed into His image. He’s the greatest giver of all and wants us to experience the joy that can be found in it. Giving should be an automatic action off the top of everything we earn. This habit breaks the grip of materialism in our lives and puts us into a greater dependency on the Lord. 

So how do we gain the desire to give? By spending time with Him. Worship, prayer, and reading His Word, must take priority over Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or shopping for entertainment. We’re all influenced by how and with whom we spend our time. Let go of the world and run to Christ. Abiding in Him will break the grip of materialism. Trust and watch Him work as you learn to give first of all He provides! You’ll be encouraged and your financial health will also improve!
