Which companies do you think would be the least likely to hire new workers?  Well, as the Great Recession drags on, we’re getting used to hearing news reports of companies laying off employees by the hundreds.

But oddly enough, some of those same companies are actually hiring, at least according to SmartMoney.com.  Sun Microsystems, Bristol-Meyers and Expedia have all let large numbers of workers go recently, but at the same time, they’re advertising dozens of open positions.

Because of the recession, many companies have been forced to retool and reorganize.  Sometimes that means closing down one operation and putting resources somewhere else where they can be more productive.

So what do you need to know?

  • First, if you’re looking for work, don’t overlook companies that have announced layoffs.  They could be on the verge of hiring in areas unrelated to the layoffs.

  • Second, many companies may have over-reacted to all the bad economic news last year, laying off workers that they now realize they need.

  • If you land an interview at a company that’s recently laid off people, ask how future reductions could affect the position for which you’re applying.

Now, there’s no question that the job market is bad. Unemployment is now at 10.2%.  But many companies are still looking for great employees.  This is no time to give up.

The best job has two components: it’s the right fit for your skills, and it’s where God wants you. So I encourage you to know what you’re good at, and pray that the Lord will lead you to the where you can give a company your best effort. Choosing the Right Vocation

In choosing a vocation, Christians must weigh their priorities very carefully. When people are out of God’s priorities, they are out of His will.

Job Loss

Dealing with lay off is not pleasant, but look at the lay off as an opportunity that can be conquered.

Making Career Decisions

Most Americans need to unlearn the errors and then learn the truth regarding career decisions.

Networking

The most effective method of finding a new job is through contacts—the people you already know or those who know the people you already know.
