How’s your waistline these days?  Well, you’d think with all the belt-tightening going on because of the recession, Americans would be losing weight, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Health experts are concerned that a lot of us have actually been gaining weight as the economy languishes.

Why’s that?  Well, by trying to save money on groceries, we may be making some poor food choices, according to a recent MarketWatch article.

Here are 3 ways the recession may be affecting our health:

  1. 70% of us say healthier foods are more difficult to afford, according to a survey by Technomic, Inc., a market research firm.

  2. Unemployment may be close to 10 percent, but those of us still working are putting in longer hours and skipping exercise.  We’re also eating on the run and settling for convenience foods that are high in calories and low in nutrition.

  3. The percentage of meals cooked in microwave ovens rose by 10% last year, while meals cooked on a conventional stove have fallen dramatically.  So, we’re cooking at home, but that doesn’t mean the meals are healthy.

Well, saving money on food is a great idea, but not at the expense of your health, because long ter, it’s going to cost you a lot more.  If you’re going to cut something, start with the so-called “empty calories,” foods that pack on the pounds but don’t nourish your body. Your waistline will thank you.

And for more ways to save on your food budget without sacrificing nutrition, I hope you’ll take a few moments and visit us online at Crown.org.

Steps to Making a Budget

In making a budget, there are several steps, each requiring individual effort.
.

Need for a Spending Plan

Without a spending plan, it is impossible to know where your money goes each month and whether you will have available funds for the things you need.

Budget Busters

Budget busters are areas that can result in financial disaster if not accounted for properly.

Finding Financial Freedom

The Lord owns everything and we are merely stewards of what is His. He has clear ideas on how He wants His people to function as His stewards.
