Chuck's Simple Step-by-Step, Easy to Use Strategy to Get Out of Debt

1. Pick the first debt you want to get rid of… Pick a really ugly one. High interest debt is always the best to get rid of first but just pick one that is getting on your nerves, hanging over your head or just seems like it won't go away.. got one picked?
2. Select a date when you think you can get that one debt paid off. Be realistic. It doesn't matter how long but be aggressive!
3. Make a commitment to someone about this goal - Choose someone who will hold you accountable, your spouse or a friend if you're single. Ask that person to check in with you and be an encouragment to you - not to embarrass you but to love you when it is tough.
4. Make it visible...make a little project like putting marbles in a jar or a "countdown" paper chain or use Post-it notes on the bathroom mirror, but something that will constantly remind you of your progress (by the way, I'd LOVE to hear your what you come up with, just email me at chuckbentley@crown.org).
5. Reward yourself. Set target dates for paying off portions of the debt and mark those milestones with inexpensive rewards. Ice cream cones are great!
6. Adjust your lifestyle around that goal. Eliminate any non-essential spending that could keep you from achieving it...then start. The hardest part of starting is...starting. Start now!.
7. Don't be discouraged - It goes faster than you think. People always tell me amazing stories of how God shortened the time they thought it would take to eliminate their debt...so you stick with it!

10. Pray. Invite the Lord to be a part of your debt reduction plan. He is faithful and will give you the strength you need to stick to your goal.
