Ben Levan: What to Do When You Lose Your Job
Losing a job is a major event because we’re a job dependent culture. It affects every area of our lives. Today's broadcast is about helping people be prepared emotionally and spiritually and also to offer practical advice for overcoming job loss. Today we’re going to focus on the practical things you can do when you lose your job. See also these recent MoneyLife programs:

Ben tells listeners that even when you lose your job, remember that God hasn’t moved. That’s real hope in a dark time. Sometimes being part of a layoff is just the kind of change someone needs to move them into a career that it truly fulfilling. He's seen people start their own businesses. Job loss is often an opportunity for greater things in the future. Ben talks about things that help people get reemployed:
Ben goes on to say that it's important to identify your strengths for your resume. God created everyone with unique talents and abilities. Go through your career experience, identify where you’ve excelled and have passion, and be able to verbalize those strengths. Satan wants you to stay discouraged and defeated. Ask someone else to look at your resume to help you see strengths that you may be overlooking. Losing a job is a part of life, don’t let it defeat you. Networking is a key strategy to finding a job. After you update your resume, make a list of people you know and decide how you want to contact them about you being out of work and looking for a job. Explain the type of job you’re interested in and ask each person to give you one reference you can contact. You have to know what you’re good at and what God’s put in your heart to do for people to be able to help you. People you contact may not have something in mind immediately, but a job opportunity may become known to them weeks later.
Internet job searches aren’t nearly as effective as networking.
Use the big internet job sites while you’re doing other things, but don’t rely on the Internet alone. Use Google to search for job boards in specific fields. Chuck says he gets letters for job help from people he doesn’t know. Don’t be afraid to contact people you don’t know who could help you.
