Marshall Keymer: The Business of Ministry
It's important to think about reinventing yourself if you are unemployed. The recession has forced people to make changes. There are many opportunities out there, so be encouraged.
Turn to the Lord and ask Him what you should pursue. ***
Marshall and Julie have been married 14 years. Marshall had about $12,000 in consumer debt when the couple married. They also bought a house shortly after getting married. The couple became uneasy about their debt. Julie's parents were concerned, too, and her father offered them a zero interest loan to consolidate the debt and pay it off, which they did. Marshall says owing the money to his in-laws provided great accountability. They are now debt free except for their mortgage.
Back in 2005, Marshall and a business associate convinced a large church to buy a vacant nursing home and turn it into a community center for ministries. It became Sonbridge Community Center in Walla Walla. Sonbridge houses a thrift store, a free medical clinic, several programs and ministries for children and families, and a Christian television station. A Christian radio station will soon move into the facility, also.
The church needed new space for its thrift operation anyway, so its leadership saw the vacant nursing home as a great opportunity. The proceeds from the thrift store pay the loan, a director’s salary, and upkeep on the facility. Remodeling was done with additional donations and a great deal of volunteer labor. Marshall and Julie are now leading the God Provides™ Film Learning Experience at Sonbridge.
I want to thank our financial partners. What you’re investing in through this ministry is bearing fruit and helping us serve the body of Christ at a key time. You can become part of Crown's effort to teach biblical stewardship by making a gift online or by calling 800-722-1976. Thank you! |

Effectual GivingIt is not the amount of money given that concerns God, because He owns it all; it’s how the money is being used that’s important. |
Responding to God's MandateSometimes generous givers are tempted to think that all they have to give is money. |
||
Bottom Line DiscipleshipYou can’t serve the Savior and all that stuff on an equal footing. One has to take precedence. |
Setting Dreams in MotionWhen it becomes clear that God is redirecting our efforts, what can we do so our natural determination does not become a liability? |

Many experts are expecting a jobless recovery from the recession. The economy is growing slowly, but jobs are lagging behind.
Our guest today is Marshall Keymer (shown with his wife, Julie) of Walla Walla, Washington. Marshall is a MoneyLife listener who got out of debt and is using what God has blessed him with to fulfill God’s purposes.
Marshall and Julie are generous givers, but also believe in using their time and talents to advance God's Kingdom. Marshall has managed a 4-doctor optometrists’ office, an auto repair shop, and is now operations manager for a company that provides “fixed wireless” Internet services.
The “Thrift and Gift” shop does $10,000 a month in business and supports everything else at the center, providing rent free space to all of the other ministries.
