Inspiring stories of Financial Freedom
2/5/2008
My husband and I had been having marital problems for a long time. Finances were a big part of the problem. Even though we didn't have a lot of debt, there was a lot of distrust and secrets.
My husband, who is unsaved, signed us up for a Crown class as what he called "a last resort for our marriage" and to try to change me. I was hesitant to go, knowing that he saw me as needing all the change, but I went, deciding that God could still work through His word.
Right after making that decision God made it clear to me that I needed to confess my financial secrets to my husband, not fearing his response. God put on my heart that I was sinning by not fearing Him only and that, if I learned His word and was obedient to Him, I need not fear my husband's response.
It took me a week to talk with my husband, and God made that week very painful financially for me. Then one day, someone called from church, and I asked them to pray for me as I needed to talk with my husband about a tough subject that night. I got off the phone and went to my husband immediately. He said, "Is there something you want to talk about?" which is certainly unusual for him to ask. I said yes, and proceeded to tell him the whole truth.
Well, we finished our Crown class a few months ago, and I have to say that God is faithful. My fear was gone immediately and our communication regarding finances is better than it ever has been. I am showing my husband respect by talking about financial matters and trusting his leadership. Our marriage has been revived, and my husband is continuing to be open to other spiritual conversations. He attends church regularly and tithes.
I give glory to God and thanks to Crown Financial Ministries for being a willing tool that God can use to change hearts and souls!

My wife and I first took Crown in Fall of 2005, finishing the final class one week before we married. Since then we have been privileged to lead or co-lead three classes and will soon begin a fourth. We have witnessed the truth of God's Word change lives, even in the short 10-week timeframe that the class covers.
In our own lives, we have become completely debt free, except for our mortgage, which we recently refinanced from a 30-year term down to a 15-year term. We have seen the "God's part, our part" principle in action, in that we made a commitment to pay off debt, and God has very miraculously provided additional funds to accelerate repayment of that debt.
Three years ago, I owed the IRS over $22,000 in back taxes. An Offer in Compromise was negotiated, and they settled for $200! I also owed my father over $65,000, and today, I owe him nothing. We made a commitment to handle money God's way, and He provided the way for nearly all that debt to be basically erased. To God be the glory!!

My wife and I met Larry Burkett at a conference in 1993. We were deep in credit card debt, we had a car loan, and we were one year into a 30-year mortgage.
At the conclusion of Larry's presentation, he came and sat with my wife and me while the next speaker spoke. During breaks, we talked to him about our financial situation. He pointed out Scripture to answer every question we had, and then he told us to take the Crown class.
We took the class in the Spring of 1994, and God convicted us to handle our finances biblically. For the first time, we were on the same page when it came to finances. We set up a tithing and giving plan. This is when we saw God's faithfulness. We established a reserve and made a commitment to decrease our lifestyle and to maintain that lifestyle. Then we systematically started to eliminate credit card debt, applying the money from one card to the next. Once the cards were paid, we started on the vehicle. Once that was paid off, we acquired an amortization schedule of our mortgage, which we used to keep us excited about paying extra on the principle. We could see instantly how much we saved in interest charges. We paid the house off in 2003.
In 2004, God convicted me to take the Crown leadership training. Since that time, God has used me to lead the Crown class five times at my place of work. We have incorportated the class into a lunchtime study, even though it takes more than 10 weeks to get through it. It has been a blessing to many of my coworkers, with some making commitments to Christ and many others now working their way to True Financial Freedom!
I am currently leading a class at my church. The excitement is high, and there is a lot of interest in future classes. I give God all the praise for this miraculous turnaround. Thanks for all you do.

I have been listening to your show for years with Larry Burkett (just loved that man), but you know that you can hear with your ears and sometimes it takes a minute to get it into your heart. But finally the message got into my heart. My husband was paying the regular monthly mortgage payment out of his paycheck, and we took my salary every two weeks and applied to the mortgage as well. In one year we paid off over $40,000, and the house is PAID for. Hallelujah!!
I found out that through sacrificing for a goal, I did not feel at all deprived. It let me know that buying stuff that I would have purchased was not necessary in the first place. Now I will do the same thing and pay off my car, which I think we can do in five months. And it's all because of God and Crown Financial Ministries.
Thank you,

Crown was a revelatory study for me. It revealed some inner pain and assisted me in determining God's direction for my life. I paid off 2 large bills while in the Crown study. Because of that blessing, I want to teach Crown to everyone. My first class as a teacher begins 2/28/08.

Dear Howard and Steve,
Over the years, my husband and I have faced many financial trials. (I have always said that our song is, "Even Though We Ain't Got Money, I'm Still In Love With You, Honey"!)
While I have been a Crown listener for years, my husband first heard the priciples you teach last January, at a one-day Crown seminar at our church. While there, he signed a commitment card, and we went home having been taught God's principles on how to handle our money.
Later that month I did our taxes and found that between quarterly and yearly taxes, we would owe about $11,000. There was no way we could raise that sort of money. Long story short, God provided! Not only that, but we received enough extra to contribute $8500 to retirement!
I do not know why God chose to bless us in this way, but I wonder if it wasn't to build my husband's faith and to bless him for his commitment to living according to God's principles regarding finances.
In the summer we received an extra $20,000. From that, we took $2000 and tried to help my mother out of some of her debt. She later returned the money we had sent, and we passed it on to the local crisis pregnancy center.
God is always faithful, in lean times and in plenty. The blessing we receive when we bless others is incomparable to anything this world can buy.
To God be the glory, all we have is from Him!

In the spring of 2004, I owed $24,000 and was 63 years old. I thought I could never retire. I took the Crown class and found out that if I gave up my $800 per month apartment, rented a room for $400 and put the extra $400 toward my debt, that I could be out of debt in a little over three years.
I did that, and in seven months. I received an $8000 per year raise and could afford to get my own apartment again and still continue the aggressive payment of my debt. I received large bonuses, tax refunds, etc. and put them all on the debt. On Sept. 19, 2006 (my 65th birthday), I became totally debt free and was able to retire in January 2007. It only took 2.5 years to do this.
My retirement pay is only half my salary, but my apartment is only $500 per month, and I am happily tithing and giving offerings. Besides my pension, I have about $23,000 in a retirement account. Only God could do that, and I thank and praise Him, and I am so appreciative of Crown Financial Ministries. I share my testimony with others as much as I can.

Thank you for your radio ministry. I have been reading Howard Dayton's book, Your Money Map, and was impressed with the "rates of return over the short and long term." I am trying to instill this method of saving $1000 a year in my kids.
Also, the best part is I now know my exact debt, have organized it in a binder, and transferred to lower APRs. I am trying to budget and am starting to pay down my debt on my way to financial freedom. Thank you for the daily encouragement. I need it!

I wanted to pass on to Money Matters how much you mean to me. Back in Sept. 2007, I had a debt balance of $38,000. Today, some 5 ½ months later, we are down to $12,000. We are shooting to be debt free (except for mortgage) by the end of April 2008. Praise God! I am already feeling the heavy load lifting. My debt spreadsheet has all zero’s on it in May! Thank you for your daily radio program which I listen to via podcast from Basrah, Iraq (I work for the US Army). Next, we plan to build back up our savings and pay that mortgage! God is good all the time!

My wife and I wanted to write to let you know the impact that you have had on us by teaching biblically based money management principles. Like many people, we thought that owning a house free and clear was only a dream.
As we have worked each month to contain our spending and put the surplus towards our mortgage, we have seen God provide, and we want to make sure He is glorified in the fact that our mortgage is paid off and we are debt free. Being debt free has provided us with a feeling of freedom which allows us to have options which were not available previously. We are also praying for the Lord’s continued guidance on managing our finances in light of being debt free.
Thank you for your heart to spread God’s principles related to finances and to help those who are struggling with issues related to finances. We know that many people are being crushed by the burden of debt and the feelings of hopelessness, stress, and frustration which can come from feeling buried by debt.
Finally, we want to thank all those who volunteer with Crown and work in all areas of the ministry. We want them to know that they have contributed to an organization that is impacting many, including us. The Crown Sunday School material was taught in our church by a man who has a heart for seeing people live according to God’s principles.

I frequently listen to your online broadcasts. This morning God used your program to directly answer my prayer request. It was yesterday's broadcast (02/21/08). The caller mentioned God's call on their lives regarding international adoption and had questions regarding their existing consumer debt.
We are in the same position as this couple, and it was like God spoke to me out loud! I was encouraged by your remarks about how God will provide in amazing ways and to trust Him. I have struggled with the financial aspect of this in light of our existing debt, plus I'm a stay-home mom who homeschools. I needed to hear this today. I forwarded your broadcast link to my husband and family members.
Thank you for being used of God to be a blessing to myself and others as well. I thank God for you, and I praise Him for His greatness and amazing grace. I am excited as we begin this adventure to see how God chooses to provide and grow us in Him.
Blessings,
Renee, NC

My wife and I were married in May. She had over $40,000 in student loans. We also were looking at purchasing a house at that time and made an offer on a house that would have led to 100% financing for $175,000.
We started listening to your program, following the Crown Money Map, and praying for God's help with our money. Last week we paid off the last of her student loans and are now on the way to a sizeable downpayment. God has helped us along each step and was looking out for us with the house offer, especially when we look at how cold this winter has been.
Thanks for all you do,

We were in a lot of credit card debt. Realizing that we could not do it without help, we decided to seek out credit counseling. A couple of months after being in credit counseling, we heard your program over the radio and got so blessed. Not only were we getting out of debt, now we are learning how God wants us to manage our money while still in debt and preparing us when we are debt free from credit cards. We finally paid off all of our credit card debt six months ago, and now I know God is speaking to my heart to support your ministry to bless those who are now in a situation we once were. To God be the glory for your awesome help.

My husband and I took the Crown class in the Fall of 2003. We were energized to learn about how to view money according to God, realizing that the hard-earned money we worked for ultimately was not ours, but His. This fundamental rule changed our lives forever.
Since the class, we've payed off all of our consumer debt, both of our financed cars, a large student loan, and we've been able to put down 20% to buy our first home. The course also taught us how to manage our money carefully so that I could quit my full-time profession and become a full-time mother for our three children. This was the biggest miracle of all to us, and I am so thankful to Jesus and to Crown that our once distant vision has now become a reality.
Yes, we still have a ways to go. We're planning to go through the class again for refreshers on how to save and budget our money more effectively, as well as learn how to invest some of our savings. But all in all, we are a wonderful success story thanks to many prayers and to Crown Financial Ministries.
